Inaugural Winter Market at Dudley Greenhouse
To expand community access to our locally grown fruits and vegetables, we launched a new weekly winter farmers’ market at the Dudley Greenhouse.
From November through February, Dorchester and Roxbury residents could purchase produce in-person on Thursdays. For those who couldn’t make it onsite, an online pre-order option with pre-packaged bags, assembled and distributed by our youth crews, were available for pick up on Saturdays.
The Dudley Greenhouse is a verdant oasis of nearly year-round urban agriculture, serving Boston’s Dudley neighborhood. As part of a system of urban farms, in combination with 2.5 acres of urban farmland on nearby West Cottage and Langdon Streets, we grow and distribute roughly 70,000 servings of fresh produce annually in the Dudley community.
“After two years of maintaining COVID limitations to the number of people in the greenhouse, it felt great to welcome folks back for the inaugural winter market,” says Danielle Andrews, Boston Farm Manager. “It was so nice to see so many regulars, and loved that our good friends at Oasis on Ballou, The Dorchester Food Coop, and The Farm House Meats were weekly vendors. Every week felt like a little party, and it was such a good opportunity for me to connect with neighbors during a quieter time of the year to talk about markets, vegetables, gardens and recipes.”
Much of the food sold at The Food Project’s markets is grown and harvested by our youth, staff and volunteers on our urban farms located only blocks away from the market. Our suburban farms supplement this selection with crops that require more space to grow.
“It was a pleasure seeing customers return week after week to not only buy their vegetables but have genuine conversations with one another,” says Yasser Aponte, member of the Dudley Greenhouse team. “We were also able to coordinate with local small businesses and give them a space for them to continue serving our Boston community.”
